Only Three Episodes Left! | Listen to Scratching the Record Episode 7 with Pabel Martinez
Growing up, Pabel Martinez received clear messages from his family about what a "professional” looks like. His mother would spend hours styling her naturally curly hair to more closely resemble that of her white colleagues. His grandfather discouraged Pabel from getting tattoos or growing a beard because “you don’t ever see CEOS with those.” This messaging made it difficult for Pabel to feel like himself when he finally landed his dream job working in tech—a struggle Pabel describes in this episode, and one that ultimately led him to leave tech and start his own company, PLURAWL.
Now, Pabel and PLURAWL are on a mission to redefine professionalism. With PLURAWL, Pabel has been a speaker and educator at companies including Google, Salesforce, Twitter, Univision, and Spotify, where he speaks about workplace culture, authenticity and emotional intelligence. Pabel is also the host of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, which delves deep into the experiences of Latinos in the workplace and the trade-offs. Often painful, that can come from being our authentic selves at work.
Pabel will share with us his professional journey–the pressures he felt to conform upon entering the workforce, how he left tech for entrepreneurship, and how he’s been able to connect with so many others who have experienced discrimination, microaggressions and challenges in work environment that wasn’t built by or for someone who looks like you.
